Best time to visit Himachal Pradesh (month by month, by region)

Himachal Pradesh is really several climates stacked by altitude. The best month depends on where in the state you are going and what you want to do.

The short version

• March–June: best all-round window for the hills. Rhododendrons, then clear warm days. Peak crowds and prices in May–June.
• July–September: monsoon in the lower and mid hills — green, misty, with landslide risk on hill roads. But this is the only season for the high passes and for Spiti and upper Kinnaur, which sit in the rain shadow and stay dry.
• October–November: arguably the sweet spot — post-monsoon clarity, turning crops, thinner crowds, roads mostly still open.
• December–February: snow season. Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie and Kufri for snow; many high roads (Rohtang, Kunzum, Jalori, Sach) closed.

By region

Shimla, Kangra, Chamba, Mandi (lower and mid hills)

March to June and September to November are most comfortable. Shimla, Narkanda and Kufri get snow from late December to February. Dharamshala and the Dhauladhar treks like Triund are green in spring and clear after the monsoon.

Kullu and Manali

Similar to the above, plus a strong winter season for snow around Manali and Solang. The Great Himalayan National Park treks and passes like Hampta run from late June to September.

Spiti and upper Kinnaur

June to early October. The Manali–Kaza route over Kunzum opens around mid-June; the Shimla–Kinnaur route has a longer season. Key, Tabo and Chandratal are all summer-only for most travellers. Winter Spiti trips (for the snow and wildlife) run via Kinnaur and are a different, harder proposition.

The pilgrimage temples

The Shakti temples in Kangra, Una and Bilaspur — Jwalamukhi, Chintpurni and Naina Devi — are low-altitude and visited year-round, but October to March is the most pleasant, and the Navratri fairs (spring and autumn) bring the heaviest crowds.

Month by month

• January–February: snow in the hill stations; high roads closed. Cold, short days.
• March–April: hills waking up, flowers, comfortable days, cool nights.
• May–June: warmest and busiest; a good time for high treks to start.
• July–August: monsoon in the lower hills; go to Spiti/Kinnaur instead.
• September: monsoon eases; excellent light, fewer people.
• October–November: clear, crisp, harvest colours; roads mostly open.
• December: first snows; festive but roads start closing.
