About

Kufri sits on the Shimla–Chail road and is one of the closest points to Shimla that reliably gets snow in winter, which makes it busy from December to February. The Himalayan Nature Park here keeps species such as the Himalayan monal, musk deer and snow leopard in enclosures. A short, often crowded, pony or walking track climbs to Mahasu Peak for views. Kufri gets very congested in peak season and the main activity area can be muddy.

How to reach

  1. Drive or take a bus from Shimla towards Chail/Narkanda; Kufri is on the main road.
  2. Local taxis run day trips combining Kufri, Chail and Fagu.
  3. The last stretch to the activity point is on foot or by pony.

Best time to visit

December to February for snow; March to June for green, cooler-than-plains weather. Avoid peak weekends if you can.

Things to know

  • Pony rides and guides quote high rates in season — agree a price first.
  • The main track can be slushy; wear grippy shoes.
  • Snow is not guaranteed on any given date even in winter.
