About
The Hampta Pass trek starts at Jobra, above Manali, and climbs the Hampta valley through forest and meadow to camps at Chika and Balu Ka Ghera. The pass day crosses from lush Kullu into the bare, rocky Lahaul landscape, descending to Shea Goru and then out to Chatru on the Spiti road. Most itineraries add a drive to Chandratal at the end. It is a popular introductory Himalayan crossing, run by many operators in the July–September season.
How to reach
- Start from Jobra, a short drive from Manali via Prini and the Hampta road.
- Nearest airport is Bhuntar (~55 km); nearest rail is Joginder Nagar or Chandigarh.
- The trek exits at Chatru, from where vehicles run to Chandratal and back to Manali over Kunzum, or to Kaza.
Best time to visit
Late June to September. Early season has more snow on the pass; the monsoon still brings rain on the Kullu side, while Lahaul stays dry.
Things to know
- The pass day is long and includes stream crossings that are higher in the afternoon.
- Go with a registered operator; this is a committing crossing, not a day hike.
- Acclimatise in Manali first and watch for altitude symptoms.
