About

Triund is the best known short trek out of McLeod Ganj. The trail climbs through oak and rhododendron forest from Galu Devi Temple, then opens onto a broad ridge where the Dhauladhar range rises almost vertically behind a line of tea stalls. Most walkers do it as a long day trip; many stay the night in a tent or at the forest rest house to catch sunrise and the night sky. The last stretch, known locally as the '22 curves', is the steepest part. Beyond Triund the path continues to Snowline and Lahesh Cave for those going towards Indrahar Pass.

How to reach

  1. Fly to Gaggal (Kangra) airport, ~30 km, or take the train to Pathankot and drive.
  2. From McLeod Ganj, drive or take an auto to Galu Devi Temple (~4 km) to start higher up.
  3. The trail is a single well-used path; a guide is optional in clear weather.

Best time to visit

March to June for green slopes and clear views; September to November after the monsoon. Snow can block the upper section from December to February.

Things to know

  • Carry water — shops on the ridge are limited and pricier.
  • Mobile network is patchy above Galu Temple.
  • Camping is regulated by the Forest Department; use registered operators.
  • Weather turns fast in the afternoon; start early.

How cold does it get at the top?

Nights are cold year-round at this altitude and can drop below freezing in winter and the shoulder seasons. Carry a warm layer even in summer.
