About
Narkanda sits on the Hindustan–Tibet road (NH5) beyond Kufri and Fagu. It is apple country, and in winter its slopes are used for beginner skiing, run by the state tourism department. A 7 km road (or a walk) leads to Hatu Peak at about 3,400 m, topped by the wooden Hatu Mata temple and giving views towards the higher Himalaya. Narkanda is quieter than the hill stops nearer Shimla and is often used as a stop on the way to Sarahan and Kinnaur.
How to reach
- Drive from Shimla on NH5 via Kufri, Fagu and Theog.
- Buses towards Rampur and Kinnaur stop at Narkanda.
- Hatu Peak is a short drive or a 6–7 km walk from the town.
Best time to visit
March to June and September to November for the orchards and walks; January to February for snow and skiing.
