Winter Carnival, Manali
When it happens
Held over four to five days in early January, with dates announced each year by the district administration and the tourism department.
The Winter Carnival was started in the 1970s to give Manali a reason to fill up in the cold, quiet weeks after New Year. It runs for four or five days in early January and combines a town carnival with winter-sports events at Solang.
There is an opening procession down the Mall with decorated floats and folk troupes, a 'Winter Queen' contest, nati dancing, a food festival of Himachali dishes such as siddu and dham, skiing and snowboarding events at Solang when there is snow, and craft and handloom stalls.
It is a tourism-driven festival rather than a religious one, but the folk-culture programme draws genuine village troupes from across the Kullu valley.
Why it matters
The carnival was created to extend Manali's season and support local artisans, hoteliers and ski operators through winter. It has become the anchor event of the Kullu valley's cold-weather calendar and a showcase for Himachali winter sport.
What to expect
A Mall Road procession, folk music and dance, a Himachali food festival, handicraft stalls, and skiing at Solang if snow has fallen. January in Manali is genuinely cold and the Rohtang road is closed; carry proper winter clothing and expect icy pavements in town.
