Shimla Summer Festival
When it happens
Held on the Ridge over three or four days in the first week of June, with dates fixed each year by the municipal corporation and the tourism department.
The Summer Festival is timed to the start of June, when Shimla is at its busiest. The Ridge and the area around the Gaiety Theatre are given over to a stage, craft stalls and food counters for three or four days.
The programme mixes Himachali folk music and dance with well-known playback singers and bands in the evenings, plus a flower show, a dog show, painting and photography competitions and stalls selling Kullu shawls, Kinnauri caps and local produce.
It is a civic and tourism event rather than a traditional fair, but it is a good, low-effort way to see Pahari performance if you are already in Shimla in early June.
Why it matters
The festival began as a way to formally open Shimla's tourist season and give the town's cultural institutions — the Gaiety Theatre, the Kalibari and the state arts bodies — a public showcase. It has run for several decades and is now a fixture of the Shimla calendar.
What to expect
Evening concerts on the Ridge, folk performances, a flower show, craft and food stalls, and large holiday crowds. Rooms in central Shimla are expensive and scarce in early June — book ahead.
