Jakhoo Temple

Jakhoo Temple sits on Jakhoo Hill, the highest point in Shimla, roughly 2 km uphill from the Ridge. Local tradition links the spot to the Ramayana, when Hanuman is said to have rested here while searching for the Sanjeevani herb. A 33 m statue of Hanuman, installed in 2010, stands beside the temple and is visible from much of the city. The walk up is steep; a ropeway also runs from the Ridge area. Rhesus macaques are numerous around the temple and are known to snatch glasses and bags.

1. Shimla is reached by road from Chandigarh (~110 km) or by the Kalka–Shimla toy train.
2. From the Ridge, walk up the marked path or take the Jakhoo ropeway.
3. Taxis go partway up to a car park below the temple.

March to June and September to November for clear views. Winter brings snow and a harder climb.

• Hold onto glasses, phones and food — the monkeys are quick.
• The climb gains height fast and can feel hard at altitude.
• Sunrise and sunset give the best light over the hills.
