About

The Mall has been Shimla's commercial spine since British times. It runs roughly level along the hillside, connecting Scandal Point at one end to the area below Christ Church and the Ridge. Vehicles are largely barred, so it is a walking street. Landmarks along or just off it include the Gaiety Theatre, the Town Hall, the General Post Office and the Kali Bari temple. The Ridge, an open square just above the Mall, gives the wide views of the surrounding hills that most visitors photograph.

How to reach

  1. Shimla is connected by road from Chandigarh (~110 km) and by the Kalka–Shimla toy train.
  2. From the railway station or ISBT, take a taxi or the lift near Cart Road up to the Mall level.
  3. The Mall itself is walk-only; leave vehicles at Cart Road or a sanctioned car park.

Best time to visit

Pleasant from March to June and September to November. December to February is cold with occasional snow, which many visitors come for.

Things to know

  • The Mall and the Ridge involve a fair amount of walking on a slope.
  • The public lift from Cart Road to the Mall saves a steep climb for a small fee.
  • It gets crowded on weekends and during peak season.
