About

Prashar Lake lies in a bowl of meadow and forest in the Dhauladhar, ringed by hills. On its edge stands a wooden pagoda temple dedicated to the sage Prashar, built in the local style and dated by tradition to the 13th–14th century. A floating island in the lake is said to shift position. The lake is reached by a rough motorable road from Mandi via Baggi, or on foot from Baggi village in a few hours. Basic dormitory rooms and a Forest Rest House are available.

How to reach

  1. From Mandi, drive via Baggi and Kandha; the last stretch is a narrow, rough road.
  2. Alternatively trek up from Baggi village (about 3–4 hours).
  3. Shared vehicles run in season from Mandi; private taxis any time.

Best time to visit

May to October for the road and meadows; December to March for a snow setting, when the road may need a 4x4 or a walk.

Things to know

  • The access road is poor — check conditions and vehicle suitability before driving.
  • Nights are cold year-round; carry warm layers.
  • Carry out your litter; facilities are minimal.
