About

Sangla lies along the Baspa river in the last broad valley of Kinnaur before the Tibet border. Above the village stands Kamru Fort, a tall timber-and-stone tower that was the seat of the Bushahr rulers and holds a Badrinath temple; the Bering Nag temple in Sangla is the focus of the periodic Fulaich flower festival. A government trout farm has operated on the Baspa since the early 1960s. Sangla is the usual stop on the way to Rakcham and Chitkul, the highest village on the old Hindustan–Tibet route.

How to reach

  1. From Shimla take NH-5 to Karcham (~200 km), then turn up the Baspa road ~18 km to Sangla.
  2. Buses run Shimla / Reckong Peo to Sangla and Chitkul; shared taxis fill the gaps.
  3. The Baspa road is narrow and cut into the gorge above Karcham — drive it in daylight.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October. The valley is under snow and largely shut down from December to March.

Things to know

  • Kamru Fort is a live temple site: visitors are given a cap and sash and photography inside is restricted.
  • No Inner Line Permit is needed for the Sangla Valley up to Chitkul.
  • Rooms are limited in peak season — book ahead, especially for riverside camps.
