About
Reckong Peo, usually just 'Peo', replaced Kalpa as the district headquarters and is the transport and services hub for Kinnaur. It sits at about 2,300 m on the slope above the Sutlej, a few kilometres below Kalpa. From the bazaar and the Kalachakra temple ground — consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1992 — the Kinner Kailash massif fills the skyline, and the shivling rock on its shoulder is visible in clear light. Travellers stop here to catch buses up the valley, stock up, and obtain the Inner Line Permit needed for the stretch towards Sumdo and Spiti.
How to reach
- Reckong Peo is about 235 km from Shimla on NH-5, an 8–10 hour drive.
- HRTC buses run from Shimla, Rampur and Rekong Peo up to Kalpa, Kaza and Nako.
- Kalpa is 7 km above by a short road; shared taxis run between the two.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October. Winter is cold with snow; the monsoon brings landslides on NH-5.
