About

Kheerganga is the classic Parvati valley trek. The trail starts at Barshaini, the end of the motorable road past Kasol and Manikaran, and follows the river past the villages of Kalga and Rudra Nag. The walk is roughly 12 km one way with a steady climb through forest and waterfalls. At the top is an open meadow with a hot-water spring and a small temple, plus seasonal tent camps and dhabas. Most people camp one night and walk down the next day.

How to reach

  1. Reach Kasol via Bhuntar (~30 km); nearest airport is Bhuntar, nearest rail Chandigarh or Joginder Nagar.
  2. From Kasol, take a bus or cab to Barshaini via Manikaran.
  3. From Barshaini the trail is well marked; the Nakthan route and the Kalga route both lead up.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to November. Snow makes the upper trail hard from December to March, and the monsoon brings landslides and leeches.

Things to know

  • Permanent construction at the top was removed by court order; only seasonal camps operate.
  • Carry out your waste — the meadow suffers from litter in peak season.
  • The hot spring has separate bathing areas; respect local custom.

FAQ

Is the Kheerganga trek difficult?

It is a moderate trek — long and steady rather than technical. Reasonable fitness is enough; the distance is the main challenge.

Is there a hot spring at Kheerganga?

Yes, a natural geothermal spring at the top is the main draw, with a walled bathing pool and a small Shiva shrine.
