Raghunath Temple, Kullu

Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu installed an idol of Raghunath here in the 1650s, brought from Ayodhya, as penance for a wrong done to a Brahmin. Raghunath was then made the ruling deity of the whole valley, above all its village gods. The temple, in the Sultanpur part of Kullu town near the old palace, is built in a mix of hill and pyramidal styles. Its central role is seen every autumn at Kullu Dussehra, when the idol is taken in procession to the Dhalpur maidan and hundreds of village deities come to pay their respects.

1. Kullu town is about 10 km north of Bhuntar airport and on the main Mandi–Manali highway.
2. From the Dhalpur bus stand in Kullu, the temple is a short walk or auto ride uphill to Sultanpur.
3. Manali is about 40 km further up the valley.

October for Dussehra, if you want the spectacle; otherwise March to June and September to November for a quiet visit.

• During Dussehra the town is extremely crowded and rooms are booked out months ahead.
• The idol is shown at set times; ask locally for the darshan schedule.
• The lanes up to Sultanpur are narrow — park near Dhalpur and walk.
