Kasauli

Kasauli was laid out as a British cantonment in 1842 and retains a low-key, wooded character with old bungalows, a church and a short Mall road. Much of the town is Army-administered and closed to the public, so sightseeing centres on walks — the Upper and Lower Mall loop, the path to Monkey Point (inside an Air Force area, with ID checks and no phones), and Gilbert Trail for birdlife. The Christ Church and a colonial-era brewery are also here.

1. Kasauli is ~60 km from Chandigarh and ~40 km from Shimla via the Dharampur turn-off.
2. Nearest broad-gauge rail is Kalka; the Kalka–Shimla line stops at Dharampur, then taxi.
3. Local taxis and a few buses connect Dharampur and Kasauli.

March to June and September to November. Winters are cold with rare light snow; the monsoon is green but misty.

• Monkey Point is inside an Air Force station — carry photo ID and expect a phone/camera deposit.
• Large parts of Kasauli are cantonment land and not open to visitors.
• It is a walking town; wear comfortable shoes for the slopes.
