Nahan

Nahan was founded in 1621 by Raja Karam Prakash as the capital of the Sirmaur state, on a Shivalik ridge above the plains at about 930 m. It kept a reputation as a clean, orderly town, with paved lanes, old temples such as the Jagannath temple, and the Ranital garden and lake. The Sirmauri Taal ground hosts fairs, and the palanquin of Parashurama sets out from Nahan for Renuka Lake during the big November fair there. It is warmer and lower than the classic hill stations, and is mainly a district town and a staging point for Renuka and Paonta Sahib.

1. Nahan is about 75 km from Chandigarh and 35 km from Kala Amb on the Haryana border.
2. Buses run from Chandigarh, Panchkula, Paonta Sahib and Solan.
3. Nearest airport and major railhead are at Chandigarh; Barara is a closer small railway station.

October to March; the low elevation makes April to June hot. The Renuka fair (November) is a regional highlight.

• It is a working district town, not a resort — expect ordinary hotels and a short list of sights.
• Roads from the plains via Kala Amb are busy with industrial traffic.
• Use it as a base for Renuka Lake and the Suketi fossil park rather than a stay in itself.
