About

Hatu Peak rises above Narkanda on the Hindustan–Tibet road, about 8 km from town by a narrow motorable road that is open only in the warmer months. The summit has a wooden temple to Hatu Mata, rebuilt in local hill style, and a clearing that looks out over apple country to the higher ranges, including the Kinnaur peaks. Below the top are the 'Jethu boulders' tied to a Mahabharata legend. In winter the road closes and the peak is reached only on foot or skis; Narkanda itself has a small ski slope.

How to reach

  1. Narkanda is about 60 km from Shimla on NH-5 (the Hindustan–Tibet road).
  2. From Narkanda, a narrow road climbs to the peak; local taxis run it when it is open.
  3. In winter the road is shut — it is then a snow walk or ski tour from Narkanda.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to November for the drive and the views; December to March for snow, on foot only.
