Rohtang Pass

Rohtang was for centuries the only road link between Kullu and Lahaul, and it still draws day-trippers from Manali for the snow, even in summer. The pass is open roughly May to November; heavy snow and sudden storms close it the rest of the year, and it has a hard reputation for weather. Since the Atal Tunnel opened in 2020, through-traffic uses the tunnel and the pass is now largely a tourist drive. Vehicle numbers are capped daily by order of the National Green Tribunal and an online permit is required.

1. Drive from Manali via Marhi; the last stretch is steep switchbacks.
2. Local taxi unions run fixed-rate Rohtang day trips from Manali, permit included.
3. The Atal Tunnel is the faster route if you are actually heading into Lahaul.

June to September for reliable access and snow at the top without deep winter risk. Conditions change fast — an early start beats the cloud and the crowds.

• Book the online permit a day or two ahead; there is a daily quota and none is issued on Tuesdays.
• Altitude is felt here — don't attempt it on your first day in Manali.
• Snow gear is rented at Marhi; agree prices first and keep warm layers for the wind at the top.
