Kasol

Kasol lies on the Parvati river between Bhuntar and Manikaran, at around 1,600 m. Once a small halt, it grew from the 1990s into the best-known backpacker centre in the valley, with a strong Israeli-traveller presence that shows in its cafes and signage. It works mainly as a base: Kheerganga treks start from Barshaini up the road, Malana is a side valley, and Tosh and Chalal are short walks away. The river, pine forest and easy pace are the appeal; the village itself is small and walkable.

1. Fly or bus to Bhuntar, then take a bus or taxi up the Parvati Valley (about 1–1.5 hours).
2. Buses run from Kullu and Manali to Kasol and on to Manikaran and Barshaini.
3. For Kheerganga, continue by shared cab to Barshaini and walk from there.

March to June and September to November. Winters are cold and quiet; the monsoon brings landslide risk on the valley road.

• The Parvati Valley road is narrow and prone to slides in the rains — check conditions.
• Cannabis grows wild here but possession and trade are illegal; the area is policed.
• Several trekkers have gone missing in this valley over the years — trek with a guide and tell someone your plan.
