About
McLeod Ganj stands at about 2,080 m on a spur of the Dhauladhar above Dharamshala. Since 1960 it has been the seat of the 14th Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, and its centre is the Tsuglagkhang complex — the main temple, Namgyal Monastery and the Tibet Museum. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives and the government offices are just downhill at Gangchen Kyishong. Around the temple, the town is a dense grid of Tibetan restaurants, craft shops and guesthouses, and it is the usual starting point for the Triund trek and walks to Bhagsu and Dharamkot.
How to reach
- Fly to Gaggal (Kangra) airport, ~15 km, or take the train to Pathankot and drive ~85 km.
- From Dharamshala a road and a short ropeway (opened 2022) run up to McLeod Ganj.
- Overnight buses connect Delhi and Chandigarh to Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj.
Best time to visit
March to June for clear Dhauladhar views and green slopes, and September to November after the monsoon. Winters are cold with occasional snow.

- The lanes are steep and often congested with traffic; distances are short but tiring on foot.
