About
Sach Pass crosses the Pir Panjal at roughly 4,400 m and is the traditional route from Chamba into the isolated Pangi Valley on the Chandrabhaga (Chenab). The track climbs from Bairagarh through Bhanjraru, with loose surface, water crossings, snow walls and no barriers; it is one of the more demanding motorable passes in the region and is usually clear only from about June to October. Beyond it, Killar is the main village of Pangi, from where a very exposed road continues towards Kishtwar in Jammu. Most travellers here are riders and 4x4 groups.
How to reach
- Drive from Chamba to Tissa and Bairagarh (about 110 km), the last village with basic lodging.
- From Bairagarh the pass is around 30 km of rough climbing to the top, then down towards Killar.
- There is no public transport over the pass beyond occasional shared vehicles; most go by hired 4x4 or motorcycle.
Best time to visit
Mid-June to mid-October, once the snow clears. Even then, fresh snow or rain can close it at short notice.
