About

Khajjiar is a large grassy glade surrounded by cedar forest, with a shallow lake and a floating island of weed near the middle. It is often marketed as 'Mini Switzerland', a comparison made by a Swiss diplomat in 1992, and a marker stone notes the label. The 12th-century Khajji Nag temple sits at the edge of the meadow. Zorbing, horse rides and paragliding taster flights operate in season. Khajjiar can get crowded and the meadow suffers from overuse at peak times.

How to reach

  1. Khajjiar is on the road between Dalhousie and Chamba and is usually visited from either.
  2. Nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), ~120 km; nearest rail is Pathankot.
  3. Taxis and HRTC buses run from Dalhousie and Chamba.

Best time to visit

March to June and September to November. Winter brings snow and some road closures; the monsoon can be misty.

Things to know

  • Stay on paths — the meadow is fragile and partly roped off for recovery.
  • Activity operators quote seasonal rates; confirm before starting.
  • It is a day-trip spot; most people stay in Dalhousie or Chamba.

FAQ

Why is Khajjiar called Mini Switzerland?

A Swiss diplomat likened the meadow-and-forest setting to Switzerland in 1992, and the nickname stuck; a stone marker at the site records it.

Is there a lake at Khajjiar?

Yes, a small, shallow lake sits near the centre of the meadow, with a floating patch of matted weed often described as a floating island.
