About
Suketi (Shivalik Fossil Park) stands where 19th- and 20th-century scientists recovered vertebrate fossils from the sandstone and clay of the middle and upper Siwaliks. Spread over about 1.5 sq km of forest near the Markanda river, it has six life-size fibreglass models of extinct animals that once lived here — among them the elephant-like Stegodon, the four-horned Sivatherium, a giant tortoise and a hippo relative — set out in a recreated Shivalik landscape. A small museum on site holds the actual fossil finds. It is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument.
How to reach
- Drive from Nahan (~21 km) or from Kala Amb on the Ambala–Nahan road.
- Chandigarh is about 70 km and Yamunanagar about 48 km away.
- There is no rail link nearby; come by road or bus to Nahan and a local vehicle onward.
Best time to visit
October to March, when the Shivalik foothills are pleasant. Summers are hot and the monsoon makes the approach muddy.

- It is a small, low-key site — good for an hour with children or anyone interested in natural history, not a full day out.
- Check opening hours locally; it can close on a weekly off day.
- Combine it with Nahan and Renuka Lake for a fuller day in lower Sirmaur.
