About

Nalagarh Fort was built around 1421 and expanded by the rulers of Hindur, a state that broke away from Bilaspur, on a low hill where the Shivaliks meet the Punjab plain. Its ramparts, courtyards and durbar hall look out over the Sirsa river and, on a clear day, far across the flat land below. The Hindur family still owns it and has operated it as a heritage hotel since the 1990s, keeping the old halls and gardens while adding rooms. It is an easy first or last stop for travellers entering Himachal from Chandigarh, about 60 km away.

How to reach

  1. Nalagarh is about 60 km from Chandigarh on the road towards Bilaspur and Mandi.
  2. Buses on the Chandigarh–Bilaspur route pass Nalagarh town; the fort is a short climb above it.
  3. Nearest airport and major railhead are at Chandigarh.

Best time to visit

October to March — the plains-edge location is hot from April to June.
