Christ Church, Shimla

Christ Church stands at the east end of the Ridge, its spire and clock the most recognisable outline in Shimla. Designed by Colonel J. T. Boileau, it was consecrated in 1857, making it the second-oldest church in north India after St John's at Meerut; the clock was added in 1860 and the porch later. Inside are five stained-glass windows — one designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of Rudyard — and a pipe organ installed in 1899 that is among the largest in the subcontinent. Services are still held in English and Hindi.

1. Walk up to the Ridge from Mall Road; the church is at its eastern end, next to the library.
2. From the railway station or Cart Road, use the public lift to the Mall and walk up.
3. Shimla is connected by the Kalka–Shimla toy train and by road from Chandigarh (~110 km).

Year-round. Late afternoon light on the facade is best for photographs; December brings Christmas services and often snow.

• It is a functioning church — keep quiet inside and check timings, as it may be closed outside service and visiting hours.
• The Ridge in front is a large open space with the town's widest views.
• The area is entirely pedestrian; the nearest vehicle access is well below.
