Sujanpur Tira

Tira Sujanpur was founded in the mid-18th century by the Katoch rulers of Kangra and became their main seat under Raja Sansar Chand (ruled 1775–1823), the patron of the Kangra style of miniature painting. The fort of Raja Ghamand Chand crowns a hill above the town; below it a very large level maidan, the Chaugan, is still used for fairs and cricket. The Gauri Shankar, Narbadeshwar and Murli Manohar temples nearby carry Kangra-school murals of scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The town's Holi fair is one of the biggest in the region.

1. Sujanpur is about 22 km from Hamirpur and connected by bus to Hamirpur, Palampur and Nadaun.
2. Nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), ~90 km; nearest broad-gauge railhead is Una or Amb Andaura.
3. The fort is a short climb above the town; the temples are around the Chaugan.

October to March for comfortable weather. The Holi fair on the Chaugan, over several days around the festival, is the standout time to visit.

• The temple murals are fading — photography without flash only, and don't touch the walls.
• The fort is partly ruined and unlit; visit in daylight.
• There is little formal tourist infrastructure — most people come as a day trip from Hamirpur or Palampur.
